Gestell (Rack) and Fenster (Window) were created for the base of the towers of Saint Nicholas’ Church in Berlin, but they are standalone works. Each consists of a steel sculpture and an associated sequence of slides projected onto it and the backdrop behind it. The slides are not depictions of actual motifs but monochrome blocks of color inspired by the potently symbolic palette of church windows and the light falling in through them.
In Gestell (Rack), the sculpture comprises two rectangular steel frames set at a right angle to recall basic architectonic forms. One is fitted with steel mesh, the other with hooks from which small objects hang, vaguely suggesting a coat rack. The colored light of the projections casts the sculptures’ shadows onto the walls, which again bring windows to mind; but rather than establishing a channel of communication between the interior and the world outside, they add depth to the ensemble’s layered visual structure.
